Adonis Seeds
Adonis, also known as
Adonis aestivalis, Pheasants Eye and
Birdseye, is an early blooming bright flower. It is native to Europe but has been introduced elsewhere, such as the western and eastern parts of the United States.
The bright crimson flowers with black centers make It easy to see why these flowers have earned the nickname
"pheasants eye".
According to Greek legend, Ares was in love with Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and extremely jealous of Aphrodite's love for the handsome youth
Adonis. So Ares plotted to kill Adonis by changing himself into a wild boar.
Adonis was killed by a wild boar and from where his blood fell, this flower sprang.
Adonis is said to have similar medicinal properties to
digitalis.
Adonis can thrive in sun or shade, but do prefer shade. These flowers are a favorite for rock gardens and in borders.
