This Spinach is thought to be native of SouthEast Asia. It was grown in China for centuries before reaching Europe in 1100CE. has it's roots in human consumption in it's medicinal use as a laxative.
The America Spinach was introduced in 1952 and is known for its succulent, first-rate flavor and thick, deep-green leaves. This variety is also very slow to bolt making it a good choice for home gardeners. The idea that Spinach has an exceptionally high level of Iron originated in 1870 when Dr. E von Wolf published this observation. It was not until 1937 that it was discovered that a decimal point was misplaced and the actual Iron content is 1/10 the original claim!
