Belladonna Seeds

Belladonna, also known as Atropa belladonna and the Deadly Nightshade, is native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia.

The name Atropa is thought to be derived from that of the Greek goddess Atropos, one of the three Greek fates or destinies who would determine the course of someones life. The name "atropa bella donna" is derived from an admonition in Italian and Greek meaning "do not betray a beautiful lady."

Belladonna has a long history of use as a medicine, cosmetic, and poison. Before the Middle Ages, it was used as an anesthetic for surgery, and it was used as a poison by the ancient Romans. Belladonna is a natural source of atropine, used in the treatment for eye disease and muscle spasms. Venetian ladies would use it to dilate the pupils.

The foliage and berries of the Belladonna plant are poisonous and should NOT be ingested. Very low doses of this herb are used as a medicine in Herbalogy and Homeopathy, but is should not be ingested without the guidance and directions of a trained professional.
