Borage Seeds

Borage, also known as Borago officinalis and Starflower, is an annual herb originating in Syria, but naturalized throughout the Mediterranean region, as well as Asia Minor, Europe, North Africa, and South America.

Borage is thought to bestow happiness and comfort upon a person and drive away the feelings of melancholy. This ancient herb is associated with courage and in medieval times was infused in wine as a tonic to banish melancholy. Today, an infusion of Borage leaves is said to be nature’s best tonic for stress and stress related problems. The leaves contains vitamin C and are rich in calcium, potassium and mineral salts.

Borage has large amounts of potassium in the form of nitrate of potash, which stimulates the adrenal glands. Herbalists have used Borage for regulation of metabolism and the hormonal system, Borage is considered to be a good remedy for PMS and menopause symptoms, especially hot flashes.
Borage plant have a mild cucumber flavor, which makes them a great addition to a salad. The bright blue, star shaped flowers can be used as an edible garnish and candied to decorate cakes, desserts, and fruit salads.

Borage is considered a vegetable in Germany. Although often used in soups, one of the better known German borage recipes is the Green Sauce (Grüne Soße) made in Frankfurt.

Borage is a good companion with most plants. Some favorites are; Tomatoes, squash, and strawberries as the Borage will deter hornworms and cabbage worms. Borage is also said to increase its neighboring plant's resistance to disease and pests. Borage increases the flavor of strawberries.

Bees love the Borage flower and make a wonderful honey from its nectar.
