Barberry bark, also known as Jaundice Berry, Berberidis, Rocky Mountain Grape, Pipperidge (and Pepperidge) Bush, Holy Thorn, Sowberry, Berberry and Wild Oregon Grape, is a natural herb derived from the dried bark of the berberis vulgaris shrub.

Many species of Barberry can be found all over the world, and they are all used for similar medicinal purposes by many different medical traditions:

  • The yellow root was an important dye for baskets, buckskins and fabric among Native Americans and the the early Spanish-Americans used the yellow root to make neck crucifixes.
  • The ripe berries were pickled had various culinary uses, and they were also taken for fever, diarrhea, dysentery and typhus fever. The fresh juice was used for mouthwash to strengthen gums or gargle.
  • Indigenous peoples used Barberry bark powder for the treatment of liver ailments, particularly jaundice. Native American shamans and medicine men believed that this herb stimulated the production of bile, thus purifying the blood.
