Dried Calamus Root
Calamus has been a valued item for trade in many cultures for thousands of years. Calamus Root, also known as Sweet Flag, Vacha, Bach Agri-turki and Baje is most commonly used for as an aromatic stimulant and a mild tonic. The aroma of Calamus has made Calamus essential oil valued in the perfume industry.
However, Calamus is said to have numerous other uses including: an emetic, nauseant, stomachic, aromatic, expectorant, carminative, antispasmodic and nervine sedative.
Calamus Root is commonly used in anorexia for its ability to stimulate digestion and thereby increase appetite by promoting the production of bile and stimulating peristalsis of the intestines. Interestingly, the Calamus Root can also be used outside of anorexic situations to DECREASE appetite while increasing energy and stamina.
Traditionally, the root was chewed however, some people prefer to make a cold infusion with the dried herb. A cold infusion of Calamus is also said to settle heartburn, nausea and gastritis.
In Bali, Indonesia, Calamus is used to flavor meat, vegetable and fish dishes.
In the Orient and Egypt, the rhizome of Calamus was thought to be a powerful aphrodisiac.
In Europe Acorus calamus was often added to wine, and the root is also one of the possible ingredients of Absinthe.
Among the northern Native Americans, it is used both medicinally and as a stimulant. Native Americans use Dried Calamus Root to treat diabetes
Calamus Root has also been reported to have "psychotropic" or hallucinogenic effects. This highly debated legend is probably based on the plants mention in a book written by Hoffer and Osmund entitled "The Hallucinogens."
