Dried Chaste Tree Berries (Whole)
The
Chaste Berry , also know as
Monk's Pepper was introduced to the United States from western Asia in the 1800's. The
chaste berry is small, about the size of a small pea, and they have a pepper-like taste and smell. In the autumn, after the leaves fall from the Chaste tress, the
chaste berries are collected and dried for use in medicine.
The medicinal properties of the
Chaste berry are a result of substances including flavonoids, iridoid glycosides, and terpenoids. The reported benefits of
chaste berry stem from its actions upon the pituitary gland and the production of a hormone called luteinizing hormone (LH) that helps regulate the menstrual cycle in women. Chaste berry also assists in the regulation of prolactin secretion in the body. The ability of
Chaste berry to decrease elevated prolactin levels may benefit some infertile women as well as some women with breast tenderness associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
The results from several studies suggest that women taking
Chaste berry may experience a reduction in the symptoms associated with PMS, including cramping, headaches, and tenderness of the breasts.
The
Chaste tree is native to the Mediterranean and Central Asia where it has been used by herbalists including Hippocrates. Ancient uses for
Chasteberry included birth control as well as a suppression of libido in males, especially in monks ( hence the name
"Monk's Pepper").
As with any herb or supplement, a physician should be consulted prior to use.
