Dried Lemon Verbena
Lemon Verbena
(
Aloysia Trphylla
) is a wonderfully aromatic plant indigenous to South America. The intense lemon flavor and smell of this dried herb help give it numerous culinary and medicinal uses.
Unlike some dried herbs,
Lemon Verbena
has the ability to retain its scent for years after being dried. This quality makes it popular as a culinary herb and as an ingredient for potpourri.
In the kitchen,
Dried Lemon Verbena
can be used make tea or to mix with other dry herbs in place of salt seasoning. There are many recipes using
Lemon Verbena
to make ice cream, sorbet, cake, fish, chicken, marinades and salad dressings. Keep in mind if you use fresh leaves, you will need less than if you are using dried since the dried lose a bit of their potency.
Lemon Verbena
is a favorite for making teas. Try mixing it with pineapple and apple mint for a unique and refreshing herbal summer blend.
Another fun use of
Lemon verbena
is to bury some crushed, dried leaves in a cup of sugar that has been placed in a covered jar or container. Use this sugar to top muffins, fruit, or sprinkle on the top of muffin batter before baking.
Lemon Verbena
can be used in place of lemon zest in recipes.
Put a few leaves in your vacuum bag to leave a fresh scent through the house.
Dry Verbena
is often added to potpourri mixes, homemade soaps, shampoos and essential oils and candles
As with any herb or supplement, a physician should be consulted prior to use.
