Elecampagne Seeds
Elecampagne, also known as Inula helenium, Alant, Elfwort, Elf Dock, Scabwort, Wild Sunflower, 'Goliath', is native to Europe.
Elecampagne's specific name, helenium, comes from Helen of Troy, Elecampane who is said to have had a handful of the plant when Paris stole her away and then sprung up from where her tears fell. It was sacred to the ancient Celts and once had the name "elfwort".
Elecampagne root was used by the ancients as a medicine and as a condiment. In England herbalists used it as an aromatic tonic and stimulant of the secretory organs. The Romans made a candied sweetmeat from the roots. The root is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal and is now seldom resorted to except in veterinary practice, considering its antiseptic properties. Today herbalists prescribe Elecampagne as an expectorant and for water retention. It has minor applications as a tonic, can aid in bringing on menstruation, and assists in healing of many ailments of the lungs.
Elecampagne produces large leaves, like banana leaves, with shaggy yellow daisy-like flowers on tall stalks. It's said that if you wear the flowers of it will attract love to you. Elecampagne makes a great background herb in any garden.
