Evening Primrose
Evening Primrose, also known as
Oenothera biensis, is a biennial herb that is also known as
"Evening Star" because the petals emit phosphorescent light at night. Its fragrant and beautiful yellow flowers open in the late afternoon and close by morning. In Germany, the plant is called
"night candle" for this reason.
Evening Primrose is a hardy plant that can grow stalks up to 6 ft tall. The roots of this plant have been eaten as a vegetable for centuries.
In folk medicine,
Evening Primrose has been used to treat asthma, gastrointestinal disorders, whooping cough, and symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome. Herbalists consider the leaves, the stem bark, the flowers and the seed oil of the
Evening Primrose plant to be valuable. They have been used in the treatment of gastro-intestinal disorders, whooping cough and asthma. A tea made from the roots is also used in the treatment of obesity.
Evening Primrose was a staple food for many Native American tribes who ate the boiled, nutty-flavoured root. They also used leaf poultices from the plant for bruises and haemorrhoids. Hunters are said to have rubbed the
Evening Primrose root on the soles of their mocassins to mask their smell and get closer to the animals.
