Grain Amaranth Seeds

Grain Amaranth, also known as Amaranthus hypochondriacus, is native to Asia.

Amaranth has been cultivated as a grain for 8,000 years. The Amaranth grain is comparable to rice or maize, but much higher in protein. It was a staple food of the Aztecs, and was used as an integral part of Aztec religious ceremonies.

Amaranth grain is very good source of vitamins including vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin B6, vitamin C, riboflavin, and folate, and dietary minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, and manganese. Because of its valuable nutrition, many farmers grow Amaranth today. The Amaranth grain can also be toasted, and they pop like popcorn. It has a delicious nutty flavor and is great in stir fry.

Several studies have shown that like oats, Amaranth seed or oil may be of benefit for those with hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Regular consumption of Amaranth has been shown to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels, while supplying antioxidants status and strengthening the immune system.
