Licorice, also known as licorice, liquorice, sweet root, gan zao , is native to southern Europe and parts of Asia.

Licorice has been used medicinally for over 3,000 years. The use of Licorice was recorded on Assyrian tablets and Egyptian papryi. Among the many treasures found in King Tut's tomb was a bundle of Licorice sticks.

Through the centuries Licorice has been used by herbalists to treat sore throats, coughs, respiratory infections, and urinary infections. Topical preparations are used for eczema and other skin problems. Licorice is also used as a laxative and has even been used to treat a few different types of cancer.

Licorice is popular in Italy and Spain in its natural form. The root of the plant is chewed as a mouth freshener. Black Licorice contains approximately 100 calories per ounce. Licorice root contains a compound that is about 50 times sweeter than sugar.
