Mammoth Basil 'Napoletano' Basil Seeds
Mammoth Basil 'Napoletano' Basil also known simply as
"Mammoth basil" is a large, lettuce leaf
basil variety, originating from Italy.
Mammoth basil gets its name from the “mammoth” size leafs it produces. It is the largest leaf basil of all basil varieties!
The flavor of this hard to find, popular
basil variety is similar to, but stronger than the flavor of
Genovese Basil.
Remove the flower spikes to encourage more leaf production.
Napolitano has absolutely huge, light green, crinkled, leaves with a heavenly aroma. The young leaves are more tender and tasty than older leaves, but all leaves can be used.
The rich flavor of these mammoth leaves makes them perfect for serious pesto makers. These
basil leaves can be used whole, in salads, layered on top chicken breasts or in any recipe calling for
sweet basil
For a delicious treat with a huge "wow factor": Cover the leaves with soft herbed or goat cheese and sliced, roasted red bell peppers; and roll them up like little jelly rolls. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and grated Parmesan and bake at 350 F for about 35 minutes (seam side down) with an inch of chicken broth in the bottom of the baking dish. Serve with marinara sauce and a side of pasta.
As with all
basils, you can also use this basil in the garden as a natural insecticide to repel aphids, mites, and tomato horn worms.
