Opium Poppy Seeds

The Opium Poppy (Papaver somniferum) also called the "Blue Seed Poppy", is the type of poppy from which opium and many refined opiates, including morphine, thebaine, codeine, papaverine, and noscapine, are extracted. The name means, loosely, the "sleep-bringing poppy", which refers to its narcotic properties.

The seeds are important food items, and contain healthy oils that are used worldwide in the culinary arts. Opium Poppy seeds are used in breads, cakes and are common in Middle Eastern cooking.

The plant itself is also valuable for ornamental purposes, the large double blooms of the Opium Poppy produce excellent seed pods on 3' stems, perfect for dried arrangements. It is widely grown in ornamental gardens throughout Europe, North America, South America, and Asia and is also known as the "common garden poppy
