Dried Gotu Kola
Gotu Kola is a creeping plant that grows mainly in the swampy areas of India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and South Africa. The
Gotu Kola leaves are about the size of
an old British penny which has earned it the nicknames;
Indian Pennywort,
Marsh Penny or
Water Pennywort.
Gotu Kola was considered as a spiritual herb in Ayurvedic medicine and was used to improve meditation and to revitalize the nerves and brain cells. Some people believe that it can help develop the crown chakra (the energy center at the top of the head). In modern herbal medication,
Gotu Kola is associated with brain elevation. This herb is also said to boost healthy hair growth in hair oils, aid in digestion, heal wounds, treat skin conditions and treat respiratory infections.
The longevity myth of the Tai Chi Chuan master Li Ching-Yun says that the master lived to be 256, due in part to his usage of traditional Chinese herbs including
Gotu Kola. This legend has lead to the herb being referred to as
"the fountain of life".
A popular folklore tale from Sri Lanka speaks of a prominent king from the 10th century AD named Aruna Withane who claimed that
Gotu Kola provided him with energy and stamina to satisfy his 50-woman harem.
