Dried Calea Zacatechichi
Calea Zacatechichi is from from Southern Mexico and Northern Costa Rica, and is also known as Dream Herb, Cheech, Leaf of God and Bitter Grass.
Shamans are known to use Calea Zacatechichi for "oneiromancy" (a form of divination based on lucid dreaming) or as a dream potentiator. This herb has also reportedly been used by the Chontal indians of Mexico as a hallucinogen. These natives say the use of Calea Zacatechichi brings divinatory messages during dreaming. The Chontal Indians, who believe in visions seen in dreams, take tea of Calea zacatechichi with crushed dried leaves or smoke cigarettes from the leaves before going to sleep. The Chontal Shaman call it "thepelakano" or leaves of god.
It has been demonstrated that extracts of this plant increase reaction times and the frequency and/or recollection of dreams versus placebo and diazepam.
Calea Zacatechichi is also traditionally used as a medicinal herb to treat fevers and diarrhea.
