Pumpkins and Squash are members of the Cucurbita family which also includes Cucumbers.
Pumpkins and Squash are high in Vitamin A, Potassium and fiber. They were once used as a cure for freckles, as a remedy for snake bites and are thought to prevent prostate cancer in men.
Pumpkins are believed to have originated in Central America. Seeds have been found in Mexico, dating back over 7000 years to 5500 B.C. Pumpkins are now grown all over the world on six of the seven continents, with Antarctica being the only exception! The self proclaimed "Pumpkin Capital of the World" is Morton, Illinois.
