Red Rubin Basil Seeds
Red Rubin Basil, also called
Rubin Red or
Red basil is a great
basil variety to start from seed and will be a stunning addition to your herb garden.
In spite of its name, this
basil is actually purple, and its stems are an even darker purple. Interestingly, the more sun the
Red Rubin Basil gets the less chance there is of green coming through on the leaves.
Red Rubin Basil tastes similar to a
sweet green basil although a bit more pungent. This
basil has a sharpness, almost like cloves. The flavor of this leaf is intense so use it sparingly in salads and do not choose this particular variety when a large quantity of
basil is needed, such as for making pesto. It is perfect to add to a salad for a splash of color and a burst of flavor.
The
Red Rubin is a full, bushy plant that will grow to approximately 12 inches tall and 10 inches wide. This variety of
basil produces large, smooth leaves and and purple flowers. It is called "red" but the leaves of this herb are such a deep color that they appear a deep purple. Its stunning leaves can grow up to 3 inches long.
Red Rubin basil blossoms with small pink flowers. This
basil grows very well in a container and also makes a wonderful accent or border plant for your garden, adding both color and aroma.
Red Rubin Basil is best used fresh. When cooked, the purple color disappears and it turns green. Because of its vibrant color,
Red Basil is a perfect choice when making infused oils.
As with all
basils, you can also use this basil in the garden as a natural insecticide to repel aphids, mites, and tomato horn worms.
