Scullcap (also sometimes spelled "Skullcap") has traditionally been said to be an excellent tonic for the nervous system. It is used to treat anxiety, nervousness and convulsions, irritability, insomnia, and neuralgia.

Scullcap may act as a sedative, to relax spasms, lower fever and stimulate the kidneys.

Scullcap is considered by some to be a natural alternative to the effects of Methadone treatment during withdrawal from drug addictions, especially opiates, tranquilizers and barbiturates. Scullcap may be an herb of choice for drug or alcohol-dependent people while undergoing a program to remove the addiction.

Scullcap is used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat a variety of conditions including epilepsy, hepatitis, infections, and cancer. The flavonoid components of scullcap are thought responsible for its activity, although scientists are unsure from where scullcap derives its benefits.

Scullcap is native to North America and grows abundantly in damp places, ditches, meadows and by the sides of ponds, from Connecticut, all the way south to Florida and Texas.

Excessive use of scullcap may cause confusion, giddiness, stupor and twitching and, as with any herb or supplement, a physician should be consulted prior to use.
