Yarrow
Yarrow, also known as
Common Yarrow, is native to the Northern Hemisphere. This perennial herb well known for attracting butterflies. There are over 100 species of
yarrow. Yarrow flowers can be found in shades of gold, white, pink, red and even pale purple.
Yarrow is considered sacred by the druids and used for I Ching divination. It was one of the herbs dedicated to the Evil One, in earlier days, and was used for divination in spells.
Myth tells that Achilles used the power of
Yarrow leaves to stem blood flow and heal wounds to cure his warriors in the battle of Troy.
Yarrow tea is used by many herbalists as a good blood builder and general tonic. A medicinal tea is made from the leaves to relieve colds and fever.
Yarrow is also used against cramps, kidney disorders, toothaches, skin irritations, hemorrhages, to regulate menses, stimulate the flow of bile, and purify the blood.
Yarrow is also used to speed up the composition of compost.
The beautiful white flowers of
Yarrow make a wonderful addition to any flower arrangement. Each tiny flower resembles a daisy. The whole plant is slightly hairy, with white, silky appressed hairs. Flowers bloom from May to August. The dried herb is edible as a spice or flavoring as well. It has strong sage flavor.
